Chapter Six

“I feel like I’m in the mafia,” Zeke said with a grin. “Our mates are inside dining while we’re out here watching for trouble.”

“You wish you were mafia,” King said. “At least we have seats instead of standing around.”

Damien glanced through the diner’s large front window to see their mates talking and laughing. He loved seeing Owen and Jace smiling. Their eyes lit up when they did, and the sight made Damien’s heart feel lighter.

“They should keep these tables on the sidewalk instead of just putting them out here for us.” Sebastian took a bite of his sandwich, chewed, and swallowed. “I like sitting out in the sun while I eat.”

“You sit on the back deck all the time while eating,” Zeke pointed out.

“Yeah, but I don’t get to people-watch,” Sebastian said. “Makes me feel like I’m interacting with my community.”

Damien chuckled. “How are you interacting when you’re sitting with us?”

He glanced at the window once again to check on the mates. There were other people in the restaurant besides them and that made him feel uneasy. In fact, Damien had felt uneasy since Owen had told him about the dinner, but he hadn’t had the heart to refuse either Owen or Jace—especially when they’d seemed so excited to go.

“They’re fine,” King said in a low voice. “I don’t think anyone is dumb enough to mess with them while we’re sitting out here.”

Damien began to bounce his leg. He felt so exposed sitting out in the open. Since finding his mates he had felt…off. He wasn’t sure why and doubted that gut feeling had anything to do with meeting Owen and Jace.

King slid a beer to Damien. “Have a drink and relax.”

Damien glanced at the cane resting against King’s chair. King had nearly died by the hands of his mate’s father. Why wasn’t he one pissed-off, raging wolf? The more Damien tried to figure out how to deal with his own messed-up situation, the more he drew a blank. The rage wouldn’t go away. The nightmares were constant. All he wanted was to feel the way he did before his capture. He just didn’t know how to find his way back to his old self.

When he glanced through the window again, he frowned. Owen and Jace weren’t seated at the table. He started to get up, but King held up a hand. “They’re probably in the bathroom. Chill.”

“I can’t.” Damien pushed his seat back and headed inside. The other mates were still talking and laughing as Damien walked to the bathroom. When he stepped inside, the room was empty, and the window was hanging wide open.

Damien threw back his head and howled before he shifted, leaped through the window, and followed his mates’ scent trails.
